XYB Ledger Terminology

Introduction

To get the most out of XYB ledger and drive the best results, we recommend you first familiarise yourself with some standard terms and concepts. With multiple stakeholders with different knowledge levels involved in a financial systems integration, it’s important everyone is aware of key concepts to define and measure success.

Industry standard terms

Below are some banking terms to familiarise or refresh your memory.

Term/Concept

Definition

Instruction

A command submitted to the ledger to initiate specific actions, such as recording postings or modifying movements. Instructions act as the starting point for any operation that changes account balances.

Movement

A movement represents the transfer of value between accounts in a ledger, defining how funds shift within the system. It is an intermediate step between an instruction (high-level request) and postings (detailed accounting records).

Posting

A detailed accounting record of a movement, ensuring compliance with double-entry accounting. Each posting reflects a debit or credit entry that maintains the ledger's balance.

Group Account

A consolidated account structure that aggregates the balances and transactions of multiple related accounts, typically assigned for one banking customer.

Chart Account

An organized list of all accounts used by an institution, categorizing assets, liabilities, income, and expenses to systematically record and track financial transactions.

Term/Concept

Definition

Account

A central element in the ledger representing either a chart or group account. They do not directly hold balances but serve as containers for wallets.

Wallet

A collection of funds within an account. Each wallet is independently addressable and has specific properties, including a currency, accounting type (e.g., liability, asset), and associated balances (committed, reserved debit, reserved credit).

Rule

A configurable logic entity in the ledger that enforces conditions and behaviours for processing instructions, movements, and other operations. Rules validate transactions, enforce business policies, and enable automation to ensure compliance and operational consistency.

Agent

An entity, such as a user or an application, that interacts with the ledger by performing operations like creating accounts, initiating instructions, or querying data. Agents are authenticated using public/private key pairs and are assigned roles that define their permissions and access levels within the ledger.
